From early childhood, Hazel has known she wanted to be an artist. Her parents did all they could to aid this interest, which included getting her sketches into a farm magazine and supplying art materials when such things were pretty rare in the Utah community where she was raised. Fostering this desire was an incredible art teacher in high school who taught Hazel the basics of art and entered her work in Utah County student exhibits. The two years Hazel had work in these shows, she won major awards. Hazel followed up this small beginning with studies with a Texas artist while she lived in New Mexico. However, these early lessons were in oil paint and suffered greatly on the dusty ranch roads between her ranch home and the site of the lessons, ninety miles away. The wonderful medium of pastel was discovered by Hazel when she spent a few years in Texas. It was again necessary to find a painting form that could travel well and pastel seemed to fit. Since pencil was Hazel's first love, pastel seemed to be similar and comfortable to use. This fact helped while she lived in Arizona and did lots of plein air painting in very beautiful areas. In the following years, Hazel has continued her studies with a course at Mesa State College and at lectures, workshops, and demonstrations with many fine artists such as Charles Hardy, Daniel Sprick, Richard Schmid, Lorenzo Chavez, Albert Handell, Duane Wakeham, and others. Hazel's work is primarily traditional realism, using subject matter around her. Usually consisting of landscapes and an occasional animal portrait. She has signatured in four National Pastel organizations: Pastel Society of Colorado, Pastel Society of New Mexico, Northwest Pastel Society, and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. She is also a juried associate member of the Pastel Society of America. Her work has been shown in national shows coast to coast and border to border. Currently, Hazel lives in Austin, Colorado where she has her studio and tutors. She exhibits at The Creamery Gallery in Hotchkiss, Colorado. |
